Dear Mom

The days are long now,

But the years went too fast.

And now you’re just gone,

Becoming part of the past.

This just isn’t fair,

We’ve all been torn apart.

We hold onto each other,

Trying to mend unmendable hearts.

I have so much to tell you,

There was still so much to say.

There’s so much happening,

Things are changing every day.

I’ve tried to explain it,

But Theodore can’t understand.

Last night, he woke up crying,

Because he couldn’t hold your hand.

I cry all the time.

But I’m trying to laugh, too.

So, for today, Birthday Girl,

I’m going to laugh with you.

You had the best laugh,

It truly was one of a kind.

And I am so lucky,

Because it’s just like mine.

Remember, when we were mad,

For seven seconds, you forced us to laugh.

This always started off so dumb,

But ended with us almost peeing our pants.

Remember the Chinese fire drills,

You always made us do.

Just stop in the middle of traffic,

And switch up the crew.

You always created the best sayings,

You so were so good at it.

My favorite one of all time is,

“He might be a shit, but he’s our shit.

Another favorite saying,

That still reigns true,

“Be true to yourself,

And fair to those around you.”

Fudgeclunk is another,

Silly, funny word of hers.

I never understood it,

But it always brought so much laughter.

You could always make life fun,

Even working cows.

Whether it was brandings, picnics, birthday parties, or weddings,

No detail was ever left out.

I imagine your heavenly birthday,

Will be much the same.

Full of life and laughter,

You were never tame.

So, Mom, I hope the lights have a dimmer switch.

I hope the wine is strong.

And if there’s a jukebox in heaven,

I hope you can hear this song.

Happy birthday to you.

Happy birthday to you.

Happy heavenly birthday, Mama!

Happy birthday to you!

I love you mom.

Em
